The first game pavilion, built originally as one room in 1898, was divided into three in the 1970s and had the clock-tower added in 1990. It was destroyed by fire on 30th October 2002 and completely rebuilt as an exact replica of the original in 2003/4.
The Red Pavilion, the pitch it overlooks and the view of the school hold many memories for generations of Old Summerfieldians; the pavilion itself is an instantly recognisable part of the school's heritage. In fact, Summer Fields without its Red Pavilion is almost inconceivable, so much so that when the fire of 2002 completely destroyed it, there was no hesitation in replacing it as it has always been.
In her oil painting, Jocelyn Galsworthy beautifully captures the essence of Summer Fields: boys playing a game of cricket with the Red Pavilion in the background. A familiar site and one that has remained unchanged over the generations.
Jocelyn Galsworthy has been painting professionally for more than fifty years and is particularly well known for her portraiture and her highly acclaimed paintings of English and International cricket scenes. Over the years, she has gained an enviable reputation as an outstanding cricketing artist and has travelled the world painting Test Matches as well as county, village, school and club grounds.
